A Family Struggling to Survive
At just 11 years old, Aisha has endured more hardship than most children her age. She is now a fifth grader at Blueview School and works hard despite the many obstacles in her life.
Aisha’s mother, Beatrice, sells vegetables in the village of Ugatuzi, earning around $3 on a good day—barely enough to feed her four children. Aisha’s father disappeared in 2017, suffering from untreated mental illness. His family took him to his birthplace, hundreds of miles away, and he has not been seen since.
Aisha has three younger siblings, each from a different father, none of whom are present. All siblings attend Blueview School, but their education, like Aisha’s, is constantly at risk due to financial struggles.
A Life of Uncertainty
Seven years ago, Aisha’s family became homeless when they couldn’t afford rent. Today, they live in a makeshift tin house on a construction site, where her mother works as a caretaker. When the construction begins, they will be forced to leave—with nowhere to go.
Six people squeeze together in their tiny, single-room shelter. They lack water, electricity, and proper space for Aisha to study. At school, she wears a tattered uniform and torn shoes and lacks basic learning materials. Yet, she remains eager to learn and enjoys playing with her friends at Blueview School’s playground.

Education: The Key to Breaking the Cycle of Poverty
Aisha’s story is not unique—millions of children in sub-Saharan Africa face similar struggles. However, education is one of the most powerful tools for breaking the cycle of poverty.
Studies show that:
Each additional year of schooling can increase an individual’s income by 12.4%, with even higher returns for women (14.5%).
If all adults completed secondary education, 420 million people could be lifted from poverty worldwide, reducing global poverty by more than half. In sub-Saharan Africa, this would cut poverty by nearly two-thirds.
Despite its importance, over one-fifth of primary-age children in sub-Saharan Africa are out of school, and 60% of youth aged 15 to 17 do not have access to education.
For Aisha, staying in school is her only chance for a brighter future—one where she can escape homelessness, help her family, and build a better life. But without support, that future is at risk.
