Omar & Khadija

Ken Obunya (KenAid President) with Omar, Khadija and their parents.

When I visited Omar Mohammed’s home, I was welcomed by a warm, vibrant young family. Despite the visible signs of poverty, Omar’s parents, Sarah and Mohammed, radiate hope. They are determined to create a better future for their children, even in the face of immense financial struggles.

Omar, born on February 3, 2016, is a Grade 2 student at Blueview School. A budding engineer at heart, he loves using mud to construct miniature houses when he’s outside. Indoors, he enjoys cuddling their family cat, Nadia. His younger sister, Khadija, born on August 30, 2022, is eager to start school later this year. But with their parents barely making ends meet, ensuring both children receive a proper education is an uphill battle.

A Family Struggling, Yet Hopeful

Omar’s father, Mohammed, is a casual laborer at construction sites. On a lucky week, he finds work for three days, earning Ksh 500 ($3.80) per day. His mother, Sarah, washes clothes for neighbors or carries water at construction sites, making up to $2.00 on good days—though steady work is rare.

Their home, an 8-by-10-foot tin structure without windows, is modest, yet they call it home with pride. However, with an unpredictable income, covering basic needs—let alone school fees and learning materials—remains a constant struggle.
